7 Unusual Things to Do in Guildford, Surrey

A vibrant town in the county of Surrey, Guildford is known for its medieval architecture and quaint shops lining its High Street. From National Trust properties to modern shops and restaurants, as well as green spaces for blissful nature strolls, there’s nothing you can’t do in Guildford. Whether you’re visiting for a day or living in the area, keep reading to discover seven unusual but fun things to do in Guildford.

1 Explore the Remains of the Oldest Synagogue in Britain - Guildford Medieval Synagogue

For seven centuries, the remains of Britain’s oldest synagogue have been hidden behind a humble bookshop. A restoration project at the bookshop in 1996 brought to light the stunning medieval chamber of the Guildford Synagogue. Archaeological excavation categorised it as a Jewish Synagogue from 1180, making it the oldest in Britain. The archaeological finds can be viewed from the clothing outlet that sits above the Synagogue.

2 Take a Trip Down the Rabbit Hole with Alice

Whether you’re a Lewis Carroll fan or not, taking a trip down the rabbit hole with Alice has got to be one of the most unusual things to do in Guildford. Across the River Wey lies the connection between the fictional Alice and her real-life counterpart - a 1984 Edwin Russell sculpture called “Alice and the White Rabbit.” The monument is the most conspicuous symbol of Guilford’s association with Carroll, who lived the last years of his life and died there. Be prepared to come across more Alice-related posts throughout town.

3 Visit One of the Last Remaining 1930s Lido - Guildford Lido

In the 1930s, the UK government built several lidos - public outdoor pools - that people could use for recreation. The Guildford Lido is one of the last of its kind. Sitting in a landscaped garden, this 50 x 70-metre open-air swimming pool draws visitors throughout the summer months when it’s open. You may not be able to take a dip wearing a 1932 Elsa Schiaparelli backless swimsuit, but you can admire the project of Mayor William Harvey that gave jobs to over 600 men.

4 Witness Celtic Revival Art at the Watts Cemetery Chapel

A redbrick and terracotta structure rising above a hill in Guildford hides some of the most stunning Art Nouveau, Romanesque Revival, and Celtic Revival Architecture. The sombre interior is in stark contrast with the bright bricks outside, but is nevertheless, breathtakingly beautiful. There are rich colours and designs along with a hierarchy of angels across the ceiling. Aldous Huxley - author of Brave New World - is one of the many souls buried in the mossy graves that mark the cemetery outside.

5 Sip Some Gin at the Silent Pool Distillery

If you’re looking for fun things to do in Guildford, the Silent Pool Distillery is well worth a visit. From the trademark teal blue bottles to the local honey used in distillation, Silent Pool’s location in the Surrey Hills defines every aspect of their gin. There are gin-based experiences and distillery tours each weekend and you can shop spirits and branded bar accessories at the distillery shop all week.

6 Delve into the Harrowing Side of Edwardian History at the Guildford Spike

In 1906, the Guildford Union Workhouse was set up to house the homeless and vagrants. Seemingly charitable on the outside, the workhouse was nicknamed “The Spike” after the sharp tools that inhabitants were provided to perform hard labour to earn their keep. Today, there are guided tours at the Guildford Spike, which operates as a museum.

7 Engage in a Round of Monopoly at The Royal Oak

Fun things to do in Guildford have to involve a round of monopoly at The Royal Oak. This family and dog-friendly pub is tucked behind the Holy Trinity and St. Mary’s Church just off the High Street. From Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit to Dominoes and Connect Four, you can play just about every game here from noon onwards. And if you’re hungry, you can dine on the best British pub cuisine, including a classic Sunday roast.

Guildford is undoubtedly one of the most exciting places in the UK. Its medieval buildings are brimming with history and culture, but the town also has the best modern amenities on offer.
